Cannabidiol (CBD) is a specific compound known as a cannabinoid that is unique to the cannabis plant. This cannabinoid can be extracted from both cannabis and hemp using a variety of different extraction methods. This CBD oil is stimulating mass interest amongst scientists and researchers in recent years.
While a lot has been learned about this specific plant-based cannabinoid, research continues. However, it is essential to note that it must be sourced from a low-THC (no more than 0.3 percent) industrial hemp plant for a CBD-infused product to be considered legal.
Scientists have uncovered countless ways that CBD can beneficially affect the mind and body. Its therapeutic effects can be applied to alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, relieve anxiety, and even reduce and prevent seizures. Additionally, it is linked with an improvement in many different things.
There are countless ways that this therapeutic plant compound can be applied, but you may be wondering – “Why is it so effective? What is the science behind it?”
The research behind CBD
Hundreds of CBD-related studies have been conducted over these past few years worldwide, many of them contributing to the ever-growing understanding and ultimate acceptance of this natural plant compound. We have decided to analyze a few different studies that prove to be paramount in the CBD Movement.
While this may not be a comprehensive list, it highlights a few of the most critical studies conducted by leading researchers in this field.
A logical starting place for this list is an update on the overall status of CBD. Published in June of 2017, this review analyzed massive amounts of existing data, studies, and research with the intent to synthesize and update vast amounts of data.
The study found that CBD is entirely safe to use. Other findings suggest that there is a crucial need for more in-depth research – this is because the majority of studies have been performed to treat psychotic disorders and epilepsy.
Common side-effects reported include dry mouth (a symptom easily remedied by drinking a cup of water before and after consumption) and an initial drop in blood pressure that can contribute to dizziness.
In another study, 15 participants were administered CBD over a period ranging anywhere from one month to one year. They were then surveyed to gather various data. Researchers aimed to learn about the patient and caregiver, any observable changes in seizure frequency and intensity, neuropsychological effects, any possible side effects, and the entire family’s overall perception following the patient’s use of CBD. This detailed observational study demonstrated some very encouraging results.
Most notably, the frequency of seizures disappeared entirely in 27 percent of patients and decreased in 40 percent. Sixty percent of patients were able to control about 50 percent of their seizures.
In the end
Plenty of research is available today that thoroughly supports the efficiency of CBD as a treatment for several different things. The more scientists learn about this plant-based cannabinoid, the more the need for additional research is warranted. Understanding yourself, how CBD works within the body, and researching reputable CBD vendors are crucial factors that consumers must consider before making their first purchase.
